Tory Education Policy Failing Swindon

Swindon secondary school children deserve the same educational standards as the rest of the country. After all they are as bright as any other children in the country.

Swindon secondary school children deserve the same educational standards as the rest of the country. After all they are as bright as any other children in the country. Whilst it is great to see Holy Cross primary school opening unfortunately according to Ofsted there is only a 50% chance of our secondary children getting a good secondary education. Instead of providing a good education for all the Conservative government has instead introduced market forces via Academies and Free Schools.

This divisive policy is letting Swindon down with the result that the average Swindon secondary GCSE exam result is 60% whilst the regional result is 69.1%. The Swindon results not only drag down the regional average; they have consistently lagged behind surrounding areas.

One outcome is some children have been taken out of Swindon for their education. This has produced spare capacity at the Swindon Academy so they plan to fill it with a divisive “Grammar” stream. This means they will select the best pupils who apply and provide them with privileges, such as travel, which other pupils will not enjoy. We believe Central children deserve quality education without selection; this is a privilege all secondary pupils should enjoy.
