About South Swindon Labour Party

The Labour Party

Nothing sums up the values of the Labour Party like this excerpt from our constitution:

The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few, where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe, and where we live together, freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.

We believe that every person should have the same opportunities in life – regardless of their gender, their skin colour, where they were born or who their parents are. We believe that government can be an enabling and empowering vehicle for social justice, and that we can achieve so much as a community.

South Swindon

The constituency of South Swindon was created in 1997, incorporating the southern parts of the old Swindon constituency – which had been in place since 1918 – and parts of Devizes. As such, the constituency contains a real mix of urban and sub-urban areas and lifestyles.

Julia Drown (Labour) was MP from 1997 until stepping down in 2005, when Anne Snelgrove fought and won the seat for Labour. Labour lost the seat in 2010.

South Swindon is made up of 12 wards – two of which are currently shared with North Swindon. Most wards have three councillors (the exceptions being the Chiseldon & Lawn and Ridgeway wards). Labour made strong gains in the 2016 local council elections, winning seats in the formerly Conservative wards of Lydiard & Freshbrook and Liden, Eldene & Park South.

The Labour Party in South Swindon

The Labour Party has an active presence in South Swindon, where a sizeable group of campaigners take to the streets (no matter the weather) to talk to residents about their concerns – both at a national and local level. We meet as a party once a month to talk about issues and policy, and feedback regularly to the national party. We also meet socially as often as we can – and have guest speakers in the past like Emily Thornberry, Jeremy Corbyn and members of our shadow cabinet.

There has never been a better time to join our party – the movement for change and the only alternative to a Tory led government committed to leaving people on their own. Either as a member or as a registered supporter, you can help make a difference to our town and our country – making new friends and having some fun at our social events along the way!
