Swindon’s Labour Councillors in Action At the Swindon Designer Outlet Expansion Exhibition

As the IT-coordinator for the Labour Party in South Swindon I don’t get out much, confined to a desk working on social media and keeping our website up to date takes up most of my time but this week I’ve been out and about in West Swindon with Councillors Steve Wakefield and Jim Robbins to get a first-hand view of what being a councillor is all about – and filming some video diaries for all to see.

Today Steve, Councillor Jim Robbins and I went to a planning exhibition showcasing the planned expansion of Swindon’s Designer Outlet Village in the Rodbourne area of Mannington and Western ward, where Steve is a councillor.

As a self-confessed shopaholic I’m a regular at the Outlet Village and found the improvements planned for the centre very interesting.

The space currently occupied by the centre is already impressive, and the planned expansion to provide a total of 22,995sq.m of retail space and increased food-court space will certainly make the Swindon Designer Outlet a premier shopping destination.

The plans are sensitive to the Railway heritage of the site, and of the town as a whole, and the developers are keen to incorporate the views of people who live and work in the town into the finished design.

The expanded centre will occupy the historic, but dilapidated, Long Shop building bringing all of the old GWR buildings back into use.

Personally I think the expansion project offers excellent opportunities for the town, both in terms of employment, and for renewed investment from retailers paving the way to make Swindon a shopper’s paradise.
