Swindon Labour Group to Move Motion in Support of Fire Fighters Dispute

The Swindon Labour Group will be moving a motion at the January Swindon Full Council Meeting calling on the government to re-enter negotiations with the Fire Brigades Union and offer an improved settlement for fire fighter pensions.

The Swindon Labour Group will be moving a motion at the January Swindon Full Council Meeting calling on the government to re-enter negotiations with the Fire Brigades Union and offer an improved settlement for fire fighter pensions.

This follows news that fire fighters are going out on strike again because of the government’s pensions offer.

The Labour Group Leader, Councillor Jim Grant, said: "The firefighters across Swindon and Wiltshire do a brave and heroic job putting at risk their own lives to protect our residents and should be rewarded for this service to the public with a fair pension settlement upon retirement.

The current Government's plan to force all firefighters to remain in active service to the age of 60 will put the personal safety of firefighters and the public at risk and the fire fighters have a fair argument in their dispute with the government. Our motion wishes to show solidarity with local fire fighters and to put pressure on the government to do what other devolved governments have already done, which is to re-enter negotiations with the FBU with a new and improved offer over pensions"
