Swindon Labour Group Shadow Lead for Highways, Councillor Bob Wright, has welcomed the fact that cross-party agreement could be reached on a road works motion he tabled for the Full Council Meeting held on Monday 23rd February. This motion was moved by Labour Councillor Bob Wright and seconded by Conservative Councillor Kevin Parry.

We need Swindon's roads to be moving, it's essential to our economy, our education provision and emergency response.

Councillor Bob Wright, said: “I am pleased the Conservative Group have seen the sense of the Labour Group’s motion on road works. The principle of control over our roads has been supported. There is little point in having a Highways Department responsible for street works and alternative routes if these can be bypassed by utility companies and others.

We need Swindon to be moving, it is essential to our economy, our education provision and emergency response. Reducing disruption during essential works has to be the minimum outcome of this motion.

I believe we should explore the voluntary schemes such as the one taking place in Bristol and if they fail to produce the right results we should look to introduce a formal Permit Scheme.

We have to encourage all road users to work with us in reducing inconvenience. The people of Swindon need to know that the Labour Group has listened and we are determined to reduce Journey times for all.”
