Steph Exell: Shaw Residents Fed Up With Neglected Footpaths

This Conservative-led coalition government has made swingeing and unfair cuts to millions of pounds of funding. This money has been taken away from Swindon and the Conservative-run council, along with Conservative MPs, have done little to save local services.

This Conservative-led coalition government has made swingeing and unfair cuts to millions of pounds of funding. This money has been taken away from Swindon and the Conservative-run council, along with Conservative MPs, have done little to save local services. In fact, there has been much hand wringing about austerity but all Swindon residents see is one savage cut on top of another.

The local Conservative councillors have run this council for the last 10 years. That's right, since June 2004.  During their 10 years of rule they have racked up debts of an almost eye-watering £100 million pounds.  As we are all aware, paying off such a massive debt is squeezing the life out of local services in Swindon.

If you look around you, there is evidence of it everywhere; potholes, litter and footpaths. Shaw is criss-crossed by footpaths and cycle ways.  The neglect of 10 years of Conservative profligate spending and hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on failed vanity projects has starved Shaw of decent roads and footpaths.  Projects like Wi-Fi, fountains, tabernacle stones and the replacement Whalebridge junction has meant that local footpaths have been neglected.

Residents in Shaw want to have decent roads, footpaths and lights that work properly not watching money wasted on Conservative pipe dreams.
