South Swindon Shortchanged by Its Tory MP

For ten consecutive days this summer recess, from the 30th July to the 10th August, Robert Buckland was – once again – moonlighting as a court recorder.  This time he earned £3,253.04 for work done when he should have been out in the constituency and was being paid as an MP to represent you.

As an MP, Robert Buckland earns £65,738 a year to carry out the duties the people of Swindon elected him to do.  That’s higher than the national median average wage of £26,244 – and a good deal higher than the median in South Swindon of £23,097.  This salary is paid for by the British tax payer, and we have every right to get what we pay for: a full time Member of Parliament.

Rather than lining his own pockets and feathering his nest for when he’s no longer an MP, Mr Buckland should be focused on casework (the issues South Swindon constituents raise with him) and furthering the interests of South Swindon.  He’s on the Justice Select Committee and gets to work in an area that’s close to his heart and interests – more than many workers can claim.  Isn’t that enough?  As Theresa May said this morning regarding Nadine Dorries – who is abandoning her constituency for a stint on ‘I’m a Celebrity’ – “Frankly, I think an MP’s job is in their constituency and in the House of Commons”.
