Picnic in the Park – Peace Day Event in Queen’s Park

I was happy to join in and help organise the Picnic in the Park event that was held in Queen’s Park today, Sunday 21 September. The event was in support of International Peace Day, which is supported by the United Nations. A group of us got together at the end of August to start planning the event, and in just over a month the day was organised.

I was happy to join in and help organise the Picnic in the Park event that was held in Queen’s Park today, Sunday 21 September. The event was in support of International Peace Day, which is supported by the United Nations. A group of us got together at the end of August to start planning the event, and in just over a month the day was organised.

Groups that attended on the day and helped with the planning Save the Children, Harbour Project for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, SMASH Youth Project, Peace Pledge Union and Swindon Amnesty Group There was an open mic session for performers compered by DJ Jules from Swindon 105.5 and entertainment was provided by Bluebell Majorettes and Swindon Samba.

The Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Teresa Page also joined us to plant a rose, aptly named Peace in the Secret Garden. We were blessed with sunny weather which helped and I think we probably had about 200 people turn up on the day. I expect there are other people I have forgotten to mention, but just to say everyone who turned up and got involved helped to make the day.

We’re already thinking about planning for next year and would like to make it an annual event, so if you’re interested in getting involved then do get in touch.
