Three locations on Marlborough Road had been considered by Swindon Council for a pedestrian crossing as part of its Pedestrian Crossing Review. These were:

  1. Marlborough Road (North) – at existing pedestrian refuge near junction with Carlisle Avenue and Evelyn St
  2. Marlborough Road (Middle) – at pedestrian refuge between bus stops
  3. Marlborough Road (South) – across northern arm of Pipers Roundabout

Design and implementation of the new crossing facility will be included in Swindon Council’s highways works programme for 2016/17, subject to funding approval.

Old Town Councillor, Nadine Watts, said:

“I had previously met with a group of parents early last year who live in Lakeside who had difficulties crossing the road safely to get to Croft Primary School.  It took a long time to cross the road, due to the amount of traffic on Marlborough Road.

The Council carried out a traffic survey.  We had another meeting in July last year with a Council officer to discuss the various options.  I am pleased that work has been carried out to assess which out of the 3 locations would be the best to have a crossing and the Council has decided on the one nearest Carlisle Avenue and Evelyn Street junctions on Marlborough Road.

I am sure the parents will be happy to have a safer way to cross the road with the children. Hopefully the scheme will get funding.  I will be pushing for this.”
