Old Town Councillor Nadine Watts will be taking the issue of illegal fishing on the Wilts & Berks Canal, which runs on the boundary of the Old Town Ward, to the next South Swindon Locality Meeting to see whether action can be taken. At the South Swindon Locality Meeting a number of different public sector agencies are represented including the Police.

Councillor Watts has said she has had a number of different residents who have contacted her complaining about the illegal fishing and felt it was something that was possible to address.

The next South Swindon Locality Meeting is taking place on evening of the 16th October at Croft Leisure Centre.

Councillor Nadine Watts said “The issue of illegal fishing on the canal is something that really is concerning residents living in the Kingshill and Okus area. Residents have asked me to try and deal with this and that is something I am seeking to do. That is why I plan to bring this issue to the next South Swindon Locality Meeting where council officers and other public sector agencies like the police are present and try to thrash out a way of addressing this issue.

I understand that the Council have taken some actions to try and dispel illegal fishing including putting up signs and the Council have said that they work with other external agencies, but clearly this hasn’t been enough to stop this issue completely and that is the next step.

I would encourage all concerned residents to attend the locality meeting so they can participate in the solution to this issue.”
