November Update from your Liden, Eldene and Park South Labour team

Fay, Chris, and Derique, your Labour Councillors in Liden, Eldene and Park South update for local residents on Liden Library Community Rooms, Country Parks, and Eldene Shops.

Liden Library Community Rooms

The closing date has now passed with interested parties having submitted interest in running the community rooms held within Liden library. This may also include the library service itself. We will keep you up to date on what happens next as we hear ourselves. Please continue to support our local library.

Country Parks

The Conservative administration has begun the process to lease Swindon’s country parks, including Lydiard Park and Coate Water, to a private company in order for that company to run and manage the parks. This is in order to cut the money the council spends on the parks each year. Conservative Councillor Gary Perkins has said that he wishes to lease the parks in a similar way that they leased the council’s leisure facilities. The Council lost all strategic control over the leisure facilities in order to eliminate the money it spent. We are opposed to this, but we would be happy to engage with the Conservative administration on ways the Council could generate more income from our country parks without having to lose strategic control.

Eldene Shops

As we write the old shops are being pulled down. The area will look very different once they are completely flattened. Work is taking place with your community groups to look at what will be part of the landscaping of the area. This will come out to wider consultation when we have used the ideas you've fed in to come up with some plans.

Changes in the voter registration system mean around one million people will be taken off the electoral register this year. Are you one of them? You can’t vote in elections if you’re not registered to vote. Soon we have a big choice to make about whether Britain should stay in the European Union, but if you don’t register, you won’t be able to have your say.

You can register to vote in just three minutes at gov.uk/register-to-vote. You just need your National Insurance number.
