The Liden, Eldene and Park South Councillors and Labour candidate for the local elections, Chris Watts, have welcomed new money for Liden village centre that has been agreed to be part of Swindon Borough Council’s budget.

Extra £70K of funding for improvements to Liden village centre agreed following pressure from your local Labour team

It was agreed at Swindon’s Full Council Meeting that an extra £70K would be spent on top of the £30K already allocated for improvements to the village centre.

In 2012 it was originally proposed that Liden Village Centre would receive £150,000 worth of improvements, like other village centres in Swindon. However this eventually fell to a proposed £30K at the beginning of the year in spite of the fact that other village centres received more than £100K in funding for improvements.

Thanks to sustained public pressure from Liden’s Labour Councillors the Council has now agreed to add the £70K for further improvements to the village centre.

Labour Candidate for the Liden, Eldene and Park South Ward, Chris Watts, said: “This news is great for the people of Liden who will now be able to able to get £100K worth of meaningful improvements to their village centre. When it was announced that Liden Village Centre was going to receive just £30K worth of improvements in 2012 after being promised £150,000, Liden’s Labour Councillors and local residents were very angry about breaking their promise to such an extent. This anger was only greatened when they learnt that village centres in other areas of Swindon had received more than £100K worth of improvements.

However, following sustained lobbying from the Councillors to ensure there were meaningful improvements to the village centre, the Council have now agreed to top up the Liden Village Centre fund by an extra £70K. This success together with others successes in Liden, Eldene & Park South, shows how effective a strong Labour team in the ward can be and should I be elected in May, I will be delighted to join them in achieving more successes in the months and years to come.”
