The annual Christmas Market in Swindon town centre has been cancelled this year.  The Council have banned street trading in Canal Walk, the previous location for the market.  The Council’s town centre managers, InSwindon, had planned for the event to be in Canal walk and have now cancelled the market as traders are not interested in running a market in the alternative location Wharf Green.

Let’s Bring Back a Christmas Market for Swindon

The annual Christmas Market in Swindon town centre has been cancelled this year.  The Council have banned street trading in Canal Walk, the previous location for the market.  The Council’s town centre managers, InSwindon, had planned for the event to be in Canal walk and have now cancelled the market as traders are not interested in running a market in the alternative location Wharf Green.

The Christmas market has been a popular event for Swindon residents and brings much needed colour and excitement to the town.

Mark Dempsey, Deputy Leader of Swindon’s Labour Councillors said: ‘ ‘The cancelling of the Christmas in Swindon  is very disappointing for shoppers and businesses in Swindon.  We are calling for the Council to get together with traders to sort this out.   The Tory Council needs to take action so they are not labelled as ‘humbug.  We need to make sure this problem is not repeated next year.

Bob Wright, Councillor for Central which includes the town centre said: ‘Swindon Councillors do not want to be seen as scrooges.  We really need a Christmas Market that provides quality and value and attracts shoppers to the town centre.’

According to the local press traders in the town centre are disappointed and concerned about the economic impact of the cancellation, claiming that the market increased footfall and trade in the town centre.

Mark says:  ‘We need to make the town centre a real day out.  The Christmas Market should be part of a calendar of festivals, live events and specialist markets to bring fun and entertainment to our town.’
