Labour’s Anne Snelgrove in bid to save Swindon’s Children’s Centres from closure

Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, has today (27th February) written to Councillor David Renard, Conservative Leader of Swindon Council, to ask that he keeps the Swindon children’s centres open for 6 more weeks until the outcome of the General Election is known.

Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, has today (27th February) written to Councillor David Renard, Conservative Leader of Swindon Council, to ask that he keeps the Swindon children’s centres open for 6 more weeks until the outcome of the General Election is known.

Under a Labour government, free childcare will be increased from 15 hours a week to 25 hours a week for working parents of three and four year olds, and there will be 50,000 more childcare places allocated by ensuring that children’s centres use their premises directly or allow local providers to do so.  If Swindon’s children’s centres close on 30th March, it will be far more difficult for free childcare to be increased in Swindon.

Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, said: “I hope that Councillor Renard is able to commit to my suggestion to keep the centres open for another 6 weeks, as I have spoken to countless parents in Swindon who have a serious concern about how they will manage after the centres close.  We have the opportunity to help more Mums and Dads into work with Labour’s childcare offer, and I’m determined that the families of Swindon won’t miss out on this because of the Council’s short-sighted plans.”
