Labour Pledges to Scrap Swindon Conservatives’ £40 Green Waste Charge

Residents responded strongly to the consultation on charging for green waste collection but the £40 charge – the equivalent of a 3% council tax increase for Band C and D properties – was still approved by Conservative councillors.

Residents responded strongly to the consultation on charging for green waste collection but the £40 charge – the equivalent of a 3% council tax increase for Band C and D properties – was still approved by Conservative councillors.  Introducing new charges on this scale makes a mockery of Conservative claims about freezing council tax this year and sets a dangerous precedent.  What next?

Fly tipping is already a growing problem and where do the council expect the waste to go from the vast majority of homes they themselves predict will not sign up to pay for what is currently covered by your council tax.

Labour opposes the charge and would reverse it if we take control of the council in May.
