The Government has been defeated in their quest to relax the Sunday Trading Laws. Despite having a majority of MPs in Parliament, 27 Conservative MPs rejected the government’s proposals which led to the government’s defeat.

The Liden, Eldene and Park South Councillor Derique Montaut, who was responsible for a period in the 1980s for enforcing Sunday Trading Laws on behalf of Swindon Borough Council, said:

“Parliament’s rejection of the government’s Sunday Trading Law is great news for Swindon workers. Opposition to the government’s agenda had come from politicians of all parties, trade unions, religious groups and even big business. Most recently, Justin King, Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s, warned a permanent extension to Sunday trading hours was not a magic answer to economic regeneration.

I believe that Sundays are really important, not only to families and churches, but all those who work flat out the rest of the week. The changes would introduce 24 hour working across the entire retail sector seven days a week which is something that no other country in Europe has so would be fairly unprecedented.

I sincerely hope that the current restrictions will stay in place to protect families, employees, small businesses, keeping Sunday as a special day.”
