A popular local path is being spoilt by litter, and Bob Cretchley, a keen cyclist and regular user of the former railway track through Old Town, is calling on local residents to join him in a clean-up of it on Sunday 1st March.

Bob, who is standing as the Old Town Labour candidate in this May’s local elections said:

“The track is enjoyed by many local people who use it for cycling, walking, running, and dog-walking.  It follows the course of the long defunct Midland and South Western Junction Railway, and as such forms part of our town’s heritage.

I like to cycle on the track, but I find it upsetting to see litter discarded along it.  Not only is this unsightly, but much of it is not degradable and if left, will simply remain for decades.  I am also concerned that broken glass bottles and rusty tin cans pose a threat of injury to young children and dogs.

Working with Councillor Nadine Watts, I have therefore arranged a clean-up of the path and adjoining woodland, and invite local residents and users of the track to come and help on 1st March.  We will meet at 2.30pm at the entrance to the lower end of the track, by the arched railway bridge behind the Mannington Retail Park.  Litter picking equipment will be provided, but those attending should wear clothing and footwear for muddy conditions.”
