This year on 23rd June there will be a referendum on whether the UK will remain in the European Union. In order to have your say in this referendum you must make sure you're registered to vote.
The deadline to register to vote in this referendum is Tuesday 7th June; registering only takes a few minutes so make sure you do it today.
You can use the gov.uk website to register quickly and easily online. You can use this website to register for the first time, to update your details, or to change your preferences about how you vote. Registering only takes around 5 minutes and all you need is your National Insurance Number.
You can register over the phone with Swindon Borough Council by calling: 01793 445500. You will need your National Insurance Number on hand when you call.
Most people will cast their votes in person at a local polling station. You will receive a polling card through the post telling you which polling station you should go to on the 23rd June. You don't need to take your polling card with you, so if you lose it you can still vote.
Anyone can choose to register for a postal vote. You can choose this when you register to vote, and you can opt to do so at a later date using the onine form or phone number above.
You will be sent all ballot papers to your home address, where you can fill them out and return them in the prepaid envelopes provided. This is useful if you believe you won't be able to get to a polling station on the 23rd June but don't want to miss out on your chance to vote.
If you delay and you're too late to send your ballot papers back by post, you can still hand-deliver your postal vote to Swindon Borough Council or to your nearest polling station.
A proxy vote means nominating a person you trust to cast your vote for you. You can apply for a proxy vote in advance if an illness or disability means that you are not able to travel to the polling station yourself. You can also apply for an emergency proxy vote up to 6 days before the 23rd June if you are unexpectedly going to be away on polling day or if work commitments will prevent you from voting.
