Five days after writing to David Renard, Anne Snelgrove receives no response on childcare bid

Five days after writing to David Renard, Conservative Leader of Swindon Borough Council, with a bid to keep Swindon’s children’s centres open for an extra five weeks, Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, has received only silence from the council leader on this important issue.

Five days after writing to David Renard, Conservative Leader of Swindon Borough Council, with a bid to keep Swindon’s children’s centres open for an extra five weeks, Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, has received only silence from the council leader on this important issue.

Anne Snelgrove, Labour candidate for South Swindon, said: “On Friday 27th February I wrote to David Renard with a request that he consider keeping Swindon’s children’s centres – which he has slated for closure on 30th March – open for a further five weeks.  I did this because if Labour win the General Election in May, we will be able to use those centres as we have pledged to increase free childcare to 25 hours per week for working parents of 3 and 4 year olds, and we will make use of spaces such as children’s centres to fulfil this promise.

Parents have told me that they do not know how they will manage when these centres close, and yet David Renard has chosen not to offer any response to this request.

In light of this, I have today copied the letter to Robert Buckland, MP for South Swindon, in my hope that he will discuss this matter with his Conservative party colleagues on the council, and will urge them to listen to the suggestion and keep our children’s centres open a little longer.”
