Disappointing Job Losses at Honda due to Fall in Demand

Honda has announced that due to a slump in car sales they will be making 800 of their employees redundant by Spring 2013.

The jobs are predominantly ones that are factory floor based and the vast majority will be people who are Swindon residents (85% of the workforce in this area live within 15 minutes drive of the factory).

It is not yet known what the effect these job redundancies will have on Honda’s local supply chain.

Honda have said they remain committed to their Swindon plant. They are also committed to working closely with all local stakeholders to support those staff who will be affected by the redundancies.

Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Swindon and the Swindon Labour Group’s Lead for Economic Development, Mark Dempsey, said:

“The terrible news of job losses at Honda is a devastating blow for Swindon; and the 800 workers and families that will be affected.  The job losses will affect the whole of our town.  Most people who live in Swindon including myself have friends or family that work at Honda, and so will feel the impact of these job losses themselves.  This is also a devastating blow to our local economy in Swindon. We need real change and a clear plan for growth to rebuild Swindon’s economy, support major employers including Honda,  and attract the new jobs and businesses our town needs”
