Council Tax up by £110 in Old Town?

Two public meetings have been arranged in Old Town. Have Your Say on Parishing by attending one of the public meetings at

Public meetings with maps and discussion on how a new Parish Council could operate. The Council’s consultation map places the area south of Bath Road together with Lawn and Wichelstowe in a “South Swindon Parish. Labour Councillors Nadine Watts and Jane Milner-Barry will tell you what they know and answer your questions to the best of their ability. When the discussion ends, there will be a secret ballot scrutinised by members of the public. This will be your chance to have your views properly noted and counted.

By their own admission, just maintaining services such as looking after green areas and street cleaning will add £100 to the Council Tax bill by way of the new Parish Precept. More services are being added all the time – branch libraries and subsidised buses being the latest – and the council has not told us what other services it may stop providing in future, so you don’t know what you might have to pay in a few years’ time. For instance, SBC can decide to transfer responsibility for the inspection and maintenance of play areas to the parish. If the parish then decides not to take them on, the equipment will be removed.
