Conservatives slammed for failing the next generation

Labour’s plan for more apprenticeships and new technical degrees will let young people choose a better future by offering the opportunity to learn a trade and develop skills for a future career.

Under the Tories, the number of 18-24 years olds claiming unemployment benefits for over a year has gone up. 750,000 young people are currently out of a job. Labour will tax bank bonuses to fund jobs for young people.

Here in Swindon, there is a clear choice: five more years of the Conservatives failing the next generation or a Labour government that guarantees a job or training for young people out of work for a year. Under the Tories the number of 18-24 year olds claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance for over a year has doubled, plus there are more than 50,000 young people claiming benefits while they struggle to find work.

Labour will tax bank bonuses to fund jobs for young people.

Labour thinks we need to get young people off benefits and into work. The Labour Party will introduce a Compulsory Jobs Guarantee giving a paid starter job and training to under-25s who have been unemployed for a year paid for by a tax on bank bonuses.

The choice will be clear: take up the offer of paid work, or lose benefits. Unlike the Tories, Labour refuses to write off our young people. We will get young people back to work so that the UK can earn its way out of the cost-of-living crisis. Only by making the best use of the talents of everyone in Britain, can we build the fair and balanced economy that we need. All our young people deserve the opportunities to succeed, but under the Tories the 50 per cent of young people who don’t go to university have too often been forgotten. A Labour government will increase the number of apprenticeships and introduce new Technical Degrees.

Anne Snelgrove said, ‘Labour’s plan for more apprenticeships and new technical degrees will let young people choose a better future by offering the opportunity to learn a trade and develop skills for a future career.’
