Central Matters: The Mechanics and the Railway Village – Junab Ali

The Mechanics Institute has deteriorated under the Conservative administration’s oversight. They are now threatening the Railway Village Conservation Area with a damaging proposal to reintroduce two way buses. The Conservation Order makes it clear that bus vibration is damaging to the area. It has already led to one lane closure, now the Tories propose to reroute and introduce two way buses on the other side of The Mechanics. The Conservation Order itself seeks improvements through the removal of buses. We are opposed to this damaging proposal on conservation grounds and because it deprives the Faringdon Road area residents of a local bus service. It also does not make sense as we are working with a cross party group, council officers and heritage organisations to produce a future for The Mechanics.
