Bob Cretchley: Successful clean-up of Old Town Cycle Path

Thanks to the hard-working group who turned up on Sunday afternoon to help clean up the Old Town Cycle Path.  We collected around 25 bags of litter, along with a mattress, a car seat and a garden chair.

Thanks to the hard-working group who turned up on Sunday afternoon to help clean up the Old Town Cycle Path.  We collected around 25 bags of litter, along with a mattress, a car seat and a garden chair.  Unfortunately, just as we were finishing it rained heavily and we all got soaked.  Whilst a community clean-up like this is a worthwhile and rewarding activity, it brings home to me what a massive issue litter is in our town.

Severe cuts to local government have aggravated this problem, and although the street cleaning teams do their best under the circumstances, our Tory controlled council is failing in its basic duty to keep our roads and footpaths clean.  Aside from this however, as a community we need to tackle the root causes of litter, starting with education (both children and adults) and also getting “fast food” outlets and retailers who give away free plastic carrier bags to face up to their responsibilities.  We need a comprehensive strategy for dealing with litter in Swindon.
