Bob Cretchley: Old Town Tidy and Planting event

I thoroughly enjoyed helping at the Old Town Tidy and Planting event on Sunday 5th October.  Fortunately the weather was good, and I spent the afternoon with Anne Snelgrove and Nadine Watts, working on the garden by the Newport Street billboard.

I thoroughly enjoyed helping at the Old Town Tidy and Planting event on Sunday 5th October.  Fortunately the weather was good, and I spent the afternoon with Anne Snelgrove and Nadine Watts, working on the garden by the Newport Street billboard.  Many years back this was part of the Swindon Town Station Garden, when the Midland and South Western Junction Railway ran through Old Town, and I understand it used to be quite a spectacle.

The team working at this site on Sunday cleared weeds and litter, forked the beds, edged the lawn and planted bulbs and pansies.  Whilst perhaps not up to the very high standards of the original station garden, we all nevertheless felt our efforts greatly improved the appearance of the site.

I was impressed by the organisation of the event, and the good turnout of people on the day, demonstrating that Old Town residents have a real pride in their area.

I look forward to the next “Tidy up Event”.
