Are you registered to vote? Make sure your voice will be heard on May 7th

Voting gives you a voice that cannot be ignored, to elect a government that represents you, what you believe in and your hopes for the future of Britain – so make sure your voice is heard and ensure you're registered to vote.

Your Labour team in South Swindon have had the General Election on May 7th etched into our minds for months, if not years. We've been out knocking on doors, delivering leaflets (yep, it's usually a Labour Party member who delivers those to your home) and campaigning against damaging Conservative government policies such as the Bedroom Tax, privatisation of the NHS and local cuts to Children's Centres (to name a few).

Anyway, this year is the first General Election under the new voter registration system (called Individual Electoral Registration) and a lot of people we've spoken to are confused about what this means for them and their vote.

Previously, the ‘head of household’ was responsible for registering everyone who lived at an address, but now every individual is responsible for their own voter registration. The new system means that for the first time people are now able to register online. To register, you will need to provide a few more details, including your National Insurance number and date of birth.

Most people who were already registered to vote  before June 2014 will be registered automatically under the new system. However, some people will need to take action to join the new register. Swindon Borough Council have written to local residents to tell them about the change. If you received a letter inviting you register, it’s important you respond so that you can have your say in future elections and referendums.
