Application to build artificial playing pitch on Buckhurst Fields

New College have submitted plans to build an enclosed 3G Playing Pitch next to its site. This would mean the loss of some public land on the area known as Buckhurst Fields (Shrewsbury Rd Playing Fields)

Councillors are minded to oppose this application in its current form and urge the public to make view the plans and register their views.

Cllr Emma Bushell said: “We realise that New College need to innovate to increase their curriculum offer and generate income in the extremely challenging funding climate. We also acknowledge the support for this bid for many local football clubs who point to a lack of facilities for children playing football in the town. However, we are concerned that if this development is agreed the community will loose public land which is well-used for walking and football. Whilst we are keen to work with New College and local football clubs to improve their situation we do not feel that benefits this development will bring justify the loss to the community of this facility."
