Small independent businesses in Swindon make an enormous contribution to our community and are one of the things that make our town unique.  To support Small Business Saturday the Labour campaign team, led by Anne Snelgrove, Parliamentary Candidate for South Swindon, spent the afternoon in Old Town, Swindon getting to know some of the small businesses in the area.

Speaking about Small Business Saturday, Anne said “Local people value the choice they get from smaller shops and businesses such as The Core, Biplob, Old Town Hardware, Hop Inn, Rays Icecreams, Young's, Magnum Wine, Old Town Foodhall and Los Gatos in Swindon’s Old Town area.

Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to shop locally and support small and independent businesses in their local community. The first Small Business Saturday in the UK took place on Saturday 7th December and I enjoyed giving my support to local small businesses here in Swindon.“

The idea of Small Business Saturday comes from the USA. During the last three years it has been running there, spending in small businesses rose as well as leading to a long-term increase in customers. In fact spending in small shops was around £3.5bn on the day. It also helped local small businesses with networking opportunities, championed their vital role in local communities and created a real buzz about entrepreneurship and people setting up businesses.

Anne added “With so many fantastic small businesses and independent retailers in Swindon it’s important to support them not just one day a year but whenever we can to ensure that our high streets are a vibrant hub for the local community.

I hope as many local people as possible join me in shopping at small businesses in Swindon and celebrate the contribution small businesses make to our area.”
