Anne Snelgrove: Reserves have an important role to play but today’s announcement cannot be allowed to mask the reason why they are having to be made

Swindon sports a proud tradition of recruiting, training and providing reserves and we cannot underestimate their commitment and contribution. They have important skills, and experience which need to be used and valued.

Reserves have an important role to play in our military services but the plan’s revealed today by the defence secretary cannot be allowed to mask the reason why they are having to be made.

This Government’s cuts to personnel have left capability gaps, and whilst I am confident our reserves will step up to the plate competently, it must be noted that these plans come following warnings from senior military figures about the danger of the military gamble this Government are taking with their policies.

I also have questions of the Government about this move; what steps have been taken to allay employers’ scepticism about recruitment of reserves and will these plans involve a package of workplace support including protection for reservists from discrimination?

Reserves and their families will want clarity about what is being asked of them in this announcement and I hope the Government provide that swiftly
