Anne Snelgrove: Government’s Spending Review Does Nothing for Growth

The focus of the Government’s Spending Review should have been clear and decisive action to boost growth and living standards this year and next year — not simply setting out cuts for two years’ time.

Inaction and delay from the Tory-led Government mean it is failing to live up to its infrastructure promises and deliver for our economy in South Swindon.

The Advertiser’s campaign to Get Swindon Working is an excellent initiative, in the face of such a lack of action by the Government.

On top of this the Government’s incompetence and failure are resulting in a lack of business confidence which is damaging the economy.

Swindon has traditionally had many jobs in distribution, the first sector to start recruiting again after a recession. Yet we are still seeing job losses in Swindon distribution companies such as Kerry Foods, which closed its Swindon plant in April with 75 job losses. This is a direct result of companies like Kerry Foods being unable to see an end to the recession because Government policies have not kick started the economy, as George Osborne promised 3 years ago.

The top priority for small business in Swindon is access to funding and local companies were dismayed that the last Budget did not give any more help with new lending, which is vital for growth. The Government has failed to get the banks lending to small businesses in Swindon.

At such a fragile time for the world and British economies, we needed our Chancellor to act to secure a stronger economic recovery. Not a part-time Chancellor with his eye on political games, but a full-time Chancellor determined to do the right thing for South Swindon and the rest of Britain.
