Anne Snelgrove: Closing our Children’s Centres is a step back, but I will continue to campaign for the support we need in Swindon

If elected, the first adjournment debate I apply for as an MP will be on Swindon Children's Centres. I will keep the pressure on the council from parliament until they see the error of their ways, and although Swindon council has made my task harder, I will work with the next Labour Government to expand early years provision in our town.

On the day that Swindon’s Children’s Centres close across Swindon following Cllr David Renard and Robert Buckland’s refusal to work with Anne on her campaign to say them, Anne Snelgrove states that she will continue to campaign for the childcare support Swindon needs.

Anne Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for South Swindon, said: “Today the doors officially closed on Swindon’s Children’s Centres.  This is a step back, but it is not the end.

Since summer 2013 I have been campaigning to keep these centres open – I have run petitions, protests, and repeatedly tried to open a conversation with Cllr Renard and Mr Buckland about how we could work together to save these centres; unfortunately without receiving any constructive response.

Anne Snelgrove: "I will continue to fight for the Children’s Centres that I know Swindon families need and deserve."

I will continue to fight for the Children’s Centres that I know Swindon families need and deserve.  Ever since this decision was announced families have told me that they don’t know how they will manage once the centres are gone.

Buckland and Renard’s refusal to work with me on this demonstrates that the only way to save Swindon’s children’s centres is under a Labour government that will provide more free childcare and safeguard children’s centres; returning them to their position in the heart of our community.

The Tory Council and MP in Swindon have let people down on this issue – but I will continue to campaign to keep these services open. If elected, the first adjournment debate I apply for as an MP will be on Swindon Children's Centres. I will keep the pressure on the council from parliament until they see the error of their ways, and although Swindon council has made my task harder, I will work with the next Labour Government to expand early years provision in our town.”
