In the last week the Conservative administration on Swindon Borough Council have said they plan to lease Lydiard Park to a private company in order for that company to run and manage the park. Conservative Councillor Gary Perkins has said that he wishes to lease the park in a similar way that they leased the council’s leisure facilities, where the Council lost all strategic control over the leisure facilities in order to eliminate the money it spent on those facilities….

The best protection for Council assets is for them to remain under Council ownership and control

Broadgreen S4L-01.JPG

"Not being sold" is not the same as remaining under Council ownership and control and we are clear that what the two Group Leaders are promising is not the same thing, either over Lydiard or over the leisure centres, where the Conservatives are proposing to give them away on 99 year leases.    A Conservative motion going before Swindon Borough Council's full council meeting this evening accuses Labour of scaremongering but we do not believe that we have been doing…

Jim Robbins: Labour Won’t Stand for the Offloading of the Jewels in Swindon’s Crown

IMG_0996.JPG

If we continue to offload our assets at the current rate, all that the Council will be able to offer residents is statutory services rather than a full range of services to develop and grow the town. A Labour Council would be much more assertive with government and would challenge national politicians to invest in the town. It has been fascinating to see the arguments and debates that have raged since the Labour Group set up our petition to safeguard…

Going, Going, Gone: Assets Under The Hammer?

ScreenClip.png

First the Oasis and Wyvern and now the Arts Centre. Conservatives picking the assets off one-by-one. People now see for themselves that Lydiard Park, Stanton Park, Coate Water Country Park, The Platform and STEAM are to face the same fate.  All this is being done in the name of austerity and at the behest of a government policy of privatisation of public services. Going, Going, Gone: a phrase we are more familiar with today, especially with TV programmes that show…
