Swindon Borough Council is spending £1m extra on debt charges in 2013/14 than it was in 2012/13. In 2012/13, Swindon Borough Council budgeted £8.7m on debt management which was used to meet the Councils borrowing costs. Swindon Borough Council lost £169K in expected car parking income in 2012/13 due to fewer cars parking in the Town Centre. This has come while Swindon Borough Council has borrowed £15m to pay for a new car park in the Town Centre, which is drawing near to completion.

This year, Swindon Borough Council’s Tory administration will pay £8.7m on debt management.  That means that £6 from every £100 we pay in our council-taxes each year goes on managing the Council’s debt, which is the same as what goes on maintaining our towns roads and footpaths.
