The Swindon Labour group has published a wide-ranging ‘recovery plan’ aimed at kick-starting Swindon’s economy and modernising Swindon Borough Council. The 8-point plan encourages greater cross-Party working and to improve community participation in decision making.

On the evening of Tuesday, 4th December, the day the government was plunged into shame and defeat, the people of South Swindon came together in hope and unity.

Overall March 2013 shows an increase of young people who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) to 7.6% compared with a national average of 5.6%. This difference is in the main attributable to 18 year olds in Swindon. For 18 year old group, the NEET level was at 12.4% (331 young people) in Swindon compared with 7.9% nationally and 10% in Swindon in March 2012.
Swindon Borough Council has agreed on the 12th June to consult over future options to meet the growing demand for more secondary school places in future years. According to Council projections, by 2018 at the latest, Swindon will be short of pupil places in its secondary schools. These projections are based on the Wichelstowe development in South Swindon continuing to expand, as well as new housing developments at Commonhead, Tadpole Farm and to the East of Swindon.
Swindon Borough Council are running a consultion on the processes and arrangements by which children will be admitted to all schools in the normal point of entry for September 2014-15, and for the Admissions Policy’s for Community and Voluntary Controlled schools in Swindon for the 2014-15 academic year.
Better youth facilities are one of our top priorities. New Youth Facilities: Last year we opened new Youth Club serving Parks and we will continue to support this important project. Park North: We have allocated money to create new children’s football pitches on Buckhurst Fields and are pressing for new facilities for Park North West Walcot: We worked with the community to repaint Lainesmead Play Area.
According to data released by the Office of National Statistics July 2012 saw a huge increase in long term unemployment of young people in the 18-24 age group in South Swindon – a rise of a whopping 800% when compared with July 2011.
