On the 24th January this year the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was introduced in Parliament and had its first reading. The Bill has since been published and the Government have confirmed their plans to vote on the Bill on Tuesday 5th February 2013.

Should this bill pass into law it would be an important step forward in ensuring that LGBT people are accepted in society and will be a step forward in changing attitudes towards the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) population.

Labour’s candidate for MP in 2015, Anne Snelgrove, is a firm believer in and supporter of Equal Marriage for all. Anne explained “Marriage is a great institution and should be available to everyone, regardless of their sexuality. This year Mike and I celebrate 35 years of marriage, a commitment we were able to make to each other in church. I feel sad that this is not available to all and if I was South Swindon’s MP I’d be voting for equal marriage with a glad heart. Far from threatening marriage, this law will strengthen it and ensure more people can celebrate their commitment to each other through marrying, should they wish to do so.”
LGBT Labour member, and IT Coordinator for South Swindon Labour, Chris O’Brien added “Equal marriage isn’t just a gimmick, it’s an important step towards equality in this country. I’ve been with my partner for going on 10 years now and we’re tired of having to accept what is in effect second class status when it comes to our relationship.”
Chris continued “With overwhelming support for equal marriage rights across the country it’s disappointing that our local Conservative MP, Robert Buckland has already made up his mind to vote against this important step forward for equality.”
